About the Event

WICCI National Mental Health Council in collaboration with Mindful Mesmerisms brings to you a comprehensive workshop on Films as a Critical Pedagogy.

About the Workshop: Films as Critical Pedagogy is an interactive workshop that delves into the use of cinema as a tool for critical education. Through carefully selected films addressing themes like social justice and identity, participants engage in discussions and activities centered on key concepts of critical pedagogy. The workshop aims to empower participants to critically analyze some cinematic narratives, identify embedded biases based on experience, and enhance media literacy while dealing with children in a classroom. By exploring films through a critical lens, participants may develop a deeper understanding of societal issues and are inspired to take meaningful action in their workplaces or homes. This workshop also emphasises the transformative potential of film in fostering critical thinking, empathy, and social awareness within educational contexts.

Why should you attend?

  • Enhanced Teaching Methods: Educators gain new strategies for incorporating critical pedagogy into their curriculum, making lessons more engaging and impactful. They will also learn how to effectively teach media literacy skills, empowering students to critically analyse media messages and representations.
  • Expanded Cultural Awareness: Exposure to diverse cinematic narratives helps educators and parents better understand cultural contexts, allowing for more inclusive and culturally responsive teaching practices at home and at school. Teachers are therefore, inspired to develop innovative lesson plans that use films as a catalyst for critical thinking, fostering creativity and enthusiasm among students.
  • Professional Development: Attending the workshop can serve as professional development, enriching teaching practices and promoting continuous growth as educators.
  • Deeper Family Conversations: As families, we sometimes forget that time spent with each other needs to be well spent. With this workshop, as parents or siblings, families can engage in discussions prompted by the workshop, fostering deeper conversations about social issues and values portrayed in films. Parents develop a better understanding of critical pedagogy, enabling them to support their children's learning and academic growth effectively.
  • Shared Learning Experiences: We can all exchange ideas and perspectives, enriching each other's understanding of critical pedagogy and cinematic analysis. Workshop participants may collaborate on advocacy projects or initiatives, leveraging their shared knowledge and skills to address social issues in their communities.
